Who is the Ruler of this World?
Q. The question I have is about the verse John 14:30, where Jesus says: “for the ruler of the world is coming. He has no power over me. . .” Is Jesus referring to the devil as “ruler” of this world?
J.E., Ocean Springs, Miss.
A. Here’s a reply from TCA columnist Father Ray Ryland, Ph.D., J.D:
Indeed, Jesus does speak here of Satan as the ruler of world. You may recall that when Our Lord was tempted in the wilderness, the devil “showed him [Jesus] all the kingdoms of the world in their magnificence, and he said to him, ‘All these I shall give to you, if you will prostrate yourself and worship me’” (Mt 4:8-9). In rejecting this temptation Jesus did not refute Satan’s claim that “the kingdoms of the world in their magnificence” belong to Satan.
