Modeling the Kingdom
One of my childhood friends grew up in a household where the saying “children are meant to be seen and not heard” was strictly adhered to. I was thankful then, and continue to be so now, that I wasn’t raised in such a family. My siblings and I were expected to have good manners and learn not to interrupt, but even at an early age our table conversation was accepted and encouraged by our parents.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus indicates clear acceptance of the children — and of the intentions of their parents who brought them — as He lays hands on them. Our Lord used the smallest members of the physical family as models for members of the family of faith. Children, and all who can accept the Kingdom in similar simplicity, are loved and blessed by Jesus.
Prayer: Father, welcome all of us as Your children and bless us each day.
