His mercy endures forever. — Psalm 136:1
Mass Readings: Joshua 24:1-13/Matthew 19:3-12
Jesus on Divorce
Jesus’ teaching on divorce is quite clear: any couple whom God has joined together cannot divorce. The key words are “whom God has joined together.” The so-called “exception clause” is no exception at all, because Jesus was speaking of unions that were contrary to God’s intention in establishing marriage. Today the Church adopts this same perspective declaring null those unions which, for any of several reasons, God had not truly joined together.
Jesus probably had a variety of situations in mind. For example, He may have been thinking of the incestuous relationship between Herod Antipas and his brother’s wife, Herodias, which Matthew has already reported. Perhaps Jesus was thinking of that sort of relationship in view of the fact that His friend John the Baptist had lost his head for critiquing that so-called “marriage.”
Prayer: Father, bless and strengthen the marriages of those whom You have joined together.
