July 27, Saturday Weekday

Offer to God a sacrifice of praise. — Psalm 50:14

Mass Readings: Exodus 24:3-8/Matthew 13:24-30

The Final Harvest

Anyone who has ever weeded a garden can relate to today’s Gospel. No matter how hard you try, you can never get rid of all the weeds. In fact, weeds seem to grow more prolifically than anything you plant deliberately.

Jesus tells us the same is true in the Kingdom on earth. We might want a church filled only with people we define as holy and righteous (which probably would eliminate most of us!), but what we get is a lot of weeds mixed in with the wheat. Jesus tells us it’s not even our job to try to get rid of the bad seed. We’re to accept the fact that weeds will grow until the final harvest when God himself will take care of the sorting.

Prayer: Lord, help me not to judge others, but to pay attention to my own soul.
