July 25, St. James

Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing. — Psalm 126:5

Mass Readings: 2 Corinthians 4:7-15/Matthew 20:20-28

Grace to Serve

In today’s Gospel, James and John’s mother comes to Jesus, asking that her sons be given the places of honor in the Kingdom. When Jesus says He can’t do that, the other apostles “became indignant at the two brothers.” Why didn’t they become indignant at the mother? She was the one doing the asking. Maybe it was because the others knew that James and John put her up to it. Or maybe it was because they thought that James and John should have stopped her.

Like James, John, and their mother, I often want all for myself, particularly when I see someone getting more honors, accolades, and financial bounty. I have to remind myself of Jesus’ response to the “sons of thunder”: following Him means giving service, not getting praise, and earthly rewards.

Prayer: Jesus, give me the grace to serve and not want to be served.
