July 24, Wednesday Weekday
The Lord gave them bread from heaven. — Psalm 78:24
Mass Readings: Exodus 16:1-5,9-15/Matthew 13:1-9
I relate to the Israelites in the first reading when they grumble that things were much better in Egypt than out in the desert. I have a tendency to look back on the past and imagine my life was filled with “fleshpots” and “bread.” Simultaneously, I project into the future and think I may “die of famine.” Like the Israelites, I’m upset and afraid. I question, “Can God spread a table in the desert?” Even when God gives me manna for the day, I find it hard to “follow (his) instructions” and live only in the present.
I know that it comes down to trust; trust that God who is providing today will continue to provide each day as it comes along. It isn’t easy to do, but then it never was.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, help me to trust in God’s blessings and promise of abundance.
