Help from the Saints?

Q. If we believe in one God, the father almighty, then why do we have to pray to Mary and the saints if we need any help? Should not “one” God be enough?

— Franz, The Bahamas

A. Here’s a reply from Father Reginald Martin:

In the Apostles’ Creed we profess our faith in “the communion of saints,” those “witnesses who have preceded us into the kingdom.… They contemplate God…and constantly care for those whom they have left on earth. When they entered into the joy of their Master, they were ‘put in charge of many things.’ Their intercession is their most exalted service to God’s plan” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 2683).
