Rosaries for sale?

Q. What is simony? I want to downsize my religious possessions before I move (mostly rosaries, medals and statues that are blessed), and I want to know if it is OK to sell them. Am I sinning if I buy religious articles on eBay not knowing whether they are blessed or not?

A. Here’s a reply from OSV columnist Msgr. M. Francis Mannion:

Simony means the action by which one party agrees to confer a sacrament on another in exchange for some temporal good, for instance, money or property. It is the buying and selling of spiritual benefits. Grace and salvation, it is suggested, can be had for the exchange of money.
