Question of the Day for Monday, July 8, 2013
Q. How did Saturday become associated with remembering the Blessed Virgin Mary as an optional memorial at Mass?
A. Here’s a reply from Father Reginald Martin:
We cannot think of the Blessed Virgin without thinking of Jesus. The two are so intimately connected that the Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us, “What the Catholic faith believes about Mary is based on what it believes about Christ, and what it teaches about Mary illumines in turn its faith in Christ” (No. 487). Liturgical honor and devotion to Jesus is often reflected in similar tribute paid to Mary. Thus the Church has long recognized the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of his mother.
