The Lord is kind and merciful. — Psalm 103:8

Mass Readings: Genesis 18:16-33/Matthew 8:18-22

The ‘Right Time’

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells a would-be disciple who wants to bury his father to “let the dead bury the dead.” He wouldn’t even let the man attend a funeral? I had always found that passage to be unduly harsh but then I heard a new interpretation. It was likely that the father was still alive! The son just wanted to get everything in order before he would turn his life over to Jesus. He was waiting for the “right time.”

That gave me a whole new way of looking at the teaching. Jesus wasn’t saying that we can’t attend funerals, but rather we’re not to keep putting off developing our spiritual life until it’s more convenient. It’s never going to be the “right time” so the right time has to be right now.

Prayer: Jesus, help me to choose to follow You today no matter what else is happening.
