Mary’s Final Years
Q. I was always taught that we do not know how old the Blessed Mother was when she died. However, on television I recently heard someone state that she was 72 when she died. Is this true?
A. Here’s a reply from Father Reginald Martin:
We must be careful when we speak of Mary’s “death” because her Immaculate Conception might have preserved her from that consequence of original sin. The Catechism of the Catholic Church carefully says, “when the course of her earthly life was finished” (No. 966), and the Byzantine Liturgy refers to her “dormition,” or “falling asleep.”
