June 27, Thursday Weekday
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. — Psalm 106:1
Mass Readings: Genesis 16:1-12,15-16 or 16:6b-12,15-16/Matthew 7:21-29
It’s a cliché that most men don’t bother looking at the written directions when trying to put together some item that comes in about . . . a million . . . pieces. A cliché that happens to be true. Many of us would rather look at the picture on the box, wing it, and then announce it came with “a couple of extra pieces” that aren’t important.
In today’s Gospel Jesus offers directions for building one’s “house,” one’s life, on solid foundation: “listen to these words of mine and act on them.” Two parts, each important. Listen! Read Scripture, spend time in prayer, takes advantage of the sacraments. And act! Take the wisdom, knowledge, and grace being offered there and look for ways to use them in service to others. Jesus’ words aren’t theory. They’re “how to.”
Prayer: Lord, You have the words of, and the directions to, eternal life.
