He who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord. — Psalm 15:1
Mass Readings: Genesis 13:2,5-18/Matthew 7:6,12-14
Here and Now
Fractions were big deal in my childhood household, when it came to kids dividing up desserts. And when there was only one item left and two children who wanted it, the rule was “one cuts and the other chooses.” How carefully the cutter made that division! How closely the chooser scrutinized each portion!
Today’s first reading shows that Abram didn’t worry about that. Since he and Lot could no longer combine their flocks, herds, and tents, Abram graciously said, “You pick. I’ll take what you don’t want.” And Lot, being no fool, took the better land. No matter. Wherever Abram ended up, the Lord was going to be there. It was where Abram would build “an altar to the Lord.” Like Abram, no matter the circumstance, we can choose to “live in the presence of the Lord.”
Prayer: Lord, thank You for being with me right here, right now.
