Are the Dead Conscious?
Q. Are the dead conscious?
A. Here’s a reply from Father Reginald Martin:
Scripture presents a dramatic image of God’s creation of humanity. “The Lord God formed man out of the dust of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being” (Gn 2:7). Modern science teaches that other material elements have replaced the original dust, but we believe, as an article of faith, “The rational soul is per se the essential form of the body” (Ludwig Ott, “Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma,” p. 97).
