June 19, Wednesday Weekday
Blessed the man who fears the Lord. — Psalm 112:1
Mass Readings: 2 Corinthians 9:6-11/Matthew 6:1-6,16-18
A looser translation of the beginning of today’s first reading could be: “Go crazy! Love others with reckless abandon. Give to others like you don’t have good sense.” Why? Because God loves a cheerful giver. Because it’s that kind of loving, of giving, that makes the most sense.
A few years ago I read a book titled Why Enough Is Never Enough. Author Gregory Jeffrey points out that whether we’re rich or poor, we can choose to be miserly. And whether we’re rich or poor, we can choose to be generous. No matter our income or abilities, we can give something. We can do something. Or not. And those who give, those who do something, are happier. They experience a type of joy that makes no sense to those who have never felt it.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me be a cheerier giver.
