Taste and see the goodness of the Lord. — Psalm 34:9
Mass Readings: 2 Corinthians 1:1-7/Matthew 5:1-12
Today’ refrain — “Taste and see the goodness of the Lord” — had me thinking about eating with my kids when they were young and my grandkids now. It was that verb, that suggestion more than command: “Taste.” Just try a little bite. That’s all. You don’t have to eat a full portion. Just a small sample. (We oldsters might remember the line from the Alka-Seltzer commercial, “Try it, you’ll like it.”)
God never forces himself on us. God never demands we love. With free will, we always get to choose. But, like any loving parent, He advises, “Try it.” Taste and see what it’s like to pray a little more often or a little more regularly. To try that new and challenging volunteer work. To offer or accept forgiveness. Or, harder still, to forgive oneself.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me be brave enough to at least taste what You’re offering me.
