Yes, Mary Worried
The Annunciation tells us a lot about Mary’s faith but today’s Gospel focusing on Jesus’ being lost in the Temple tells us something else. Even Mary — conceived without original sin and the one who quickly answered “yes” to the angel’s message of her bearing God’s Son — wasn’t immune from worry. Luke says “after three days they found him,” and what frantic days — and frightening nights — they must have been for Joseph and Mary. We get a glimpse of that when Mary tells Jesus, “Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety.”
A while ago I asked an older woman at the parish how, as the mother of nine children, she didn’t worry all the time. She smiled and said, “I do.” Faith and worry aren’t mutually exclusive.
Prayer: Dear Mother Mary, help those who are anxious find peace and rest.
