Caffeine for the Soul
Most days I take a two- or three-mile walk and I like to vary my route around the little suburb where I live. On one I always keep an eye out for the house that has images of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary on the wall near the front door. In “unchurched” Washington state, this is pretty extraordinary. I slow down, say a prayer, and have a little more pep in my step.
I suppose, in simple terms, that’s what a sacramental — like an image, a statue, a rosary, and so on — is supposed to do. That’s why more than just nice, it’s important to have them in our homes. Our cars. And, if possible, our workplaces. In very non-theological terms, they’re a bit like “caffeine for the soul.”
Prayer: Sacred Heart of Jesus, help me better love those who feel unloved.
