June 6, Thursday Weekday
Blessed are those who fear the Lord. — Psalm 128 (see 1)
Mass Readings: Tobit 6:10-11;7:1bcde,9-17;8:4-9a/Mark 12:28-34
A Little Heaven on Earth
I wasn’t a newlywed but I was still pretty young when I began praying that Monica and I could grow old together. It’s the same prayer that Tobiah and Sarah say in today’s first reading: “allow us to live together to a happy old age.” No doubt when Monica and I were in our 20s, 60 seemed old. When we hit our late 50s and then reached that number, we knew it wasn’t.
Over the past few years I’ve paid a lot more attention to widows and widowers when they talk about their spouses. What I’ve learned is this: In a happy marriage, there are never enough years. It’s a little bit of heaven on earth but full heaven, together again as a couple, will have to wait.
Prayer: Dear Lord, be with those who are grieving the death of a loved one.
