June 4, Tuesday Weekday
The heart of the just one is firm, trusting in the Lord. — Psalm 112 (see7)
Mass Readings: Tobit 2:9-14/Mark 12:13-17
Our Elder Brothers and Sisters
The first phrase from today’s first reading can seem a little shocking: “On the night of Pentecost.” The book of Tobit is from the Old Testament and Pentecost — the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles — took place 10 days after the Ascension so how . . . ?
Our feast took place on their feast. “Our” being Christians, and “their” being Jews. As with any family, the Church didn’t just spring from nothing. We have ancestors (both known and unknown) that go back to the beginning of humanity. And as 21st-century Catholics, we have ancestors in the faith, or the faiths — both Christian and Jewish — who played roles in providing the incredible gift that’s ours today. A gift we’re called to hand on to others.
Prayer: Thank You, dear Lord, for those who led me to You.
