The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart. — Psalm 19:9

Mass Readings: Sirach 51:12cd-20/Mark 11:27-33

The Gift of Wisdom

In high school we began almost every class with a prayer to the Holy Spirit that included the line “grant that we may be truly wise.” Each room had a two-foot plaster statue of Mary holding the Christ Child; an image of her in her role as “Sedes Sapientiae,” the “Seat of Wisdom.” I still say that prayer, slowing down on that line; and we have that statue in our home. (A sacramental that came to mean so much more during this last year.)

I thought of that when I read today’s selection from Sirach: “When I was young and innocent, I sought wisdom openly in my prayer.” Whether we’re young and innocent, or old and tired, God wants to fill our lives with this gift of the Holy Spirit. We can ask for it today.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, grant that I may be truly wise.
