May 31, Visitation of Mary
Among you is the great and Holy One of Israel. — Isaiah 12:6
Mass Readings: Zephaniah 3:14-18a or Romans 12:9-16/Luke 1:39-56
Mary’s Magnificent Song
Mary magnifies God. Through the lens of Mary’s life, words and transparent joy, we glimpse something of the goodness, greatness, and glory of God — a God who is merciful God; a God who acts in power; a God who provides unfailingly for those who depend on Him as Mary did. No wonder Mary bursts into this magnificent song of praise!
I’m uncomfortably conscious of my preoccupation with “I,” “me” and “my.” Mary consistently turns the spotlight on God, while she herself is content to stand in the shadows. A microscope changes not a whit in size when it magnifies the objects under its lens. But those who magnify the Lord grow in spiritual stature: in today’s Gospel the humble handmaid will be called “blessed” and God has “lifted up the lowly.”
Prayer: Mighty and matchless God, majestic and magnificent Lord, be exalted in my life!
