Let the just exult and rejoice in the Lord. — Psalm 32:11

Mass Readings: Sirach 17:20-24/Mark 10:17-27

Lord Over All

The call of Jesus is, first and last, a call to relationship. We may obey laws, but our love and loyalty can only be pledged to a person. The rich man in today’s Gospel was willing to obey God’s laws, but unwilling to surrender to the Law-Giver. He addressed Jesus as “Good Teacher,” but wasn’t prepared to acknowledge Him as Lord. The man was law-abiding, but he failed to abide in the Lord.

Because the rich man in today’s Gospel had allowed his possessions to possess him, he was unable to surrender to Jesus. He was, in Jesus’ words, “lacking in one thing.” What is it that stands between you and your total and whole-hearted surrender to the Lord?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me to bring all areas of my life under Your lordship.
