May 26, Most Holy Trinity
O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth! — Psalm 8:2
Mass Readings: Proverbs 8:22-31/Romans 5:1-5/John 16:12-15
I’ve been helping my son with his math homework lately, teaching him learn how to shift a number from one side of the equation to the other in order to figure out the value of the unknown “x.” For many years, the Holy Spirit was an enigma to me, like that unknown “x” in algebra, and I recall a helpful illustration someone used to explain the role of the Holy Spirit. She said, “The Holy Spirit comes over to our side of the equation.”
Paul writes in today’s second reading, “the love of God has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.” At Christmas, God dwelt among humanity in the person of Jesus (Jn 1:14); since Pentecost, God’s presence is mediated in our lives through the Holy Spirit.
Prayer: Lord, every moment, keep me gratefully and reverently conscious of Your presence in my life.
