May 22, Wednesday Weekday
O Lord, great peace have they who love your law. — Psalm 119:165
Mass Readings: Sirach 4:11-19/Mark 9:38-40
Follow the Shepherd
I saw a poster that depicted a flock of fluffy white sheep, all bunched together. And then off on its own, a solitary sheep — its coat a shocking pink, its face sporting sun-glasses — who’s proclaiming, “I may be different, but I still follow the Shepherd!” In today’s Gospel, John reacts with hostility toward someone “because he was not following us.” But Jesus — emphasizing that what truly matters is that the man was acting “in my name” — issues a command: “Do not stop him.”
Herd instinct is deeply ingrained in many of us. We frequently strive to conform in order to gain acceptance; sometimes, we also demand that others conform with our own particular way of doing things. Christian unity, however, is not grounded in uniformity, but forged through diversity. The only crucial question is this: Do I follow the one Shepherd?
Prayer: Good Shepherd, help me accept and appreciate Christians who work or worship differently from me.
