May 21, Tuesday Weekday
Commit your life to the Lord, and he will help you. — Psalm 37 (see 5)
Mass Readings: Sirach 2:1-11/Mark 9:30-37
Before the Big Game, the coach has the team huddle up. He goes over strategy and gives last-minute instructions and encouragement. They listen, they jump up and cheer, and then they’re off into the game.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus also calls for a huddle. But Jesus’ instructions to His disciples run counter to those usually issued in our games, our workplaces, and our schools. Instead of saying, “Get out there and get ’em!” Jesus says, ‘Get out there and serve ’em!’ Jesus’ words are accompanied by an object lesson which demonstrates what it means to be “a servant of all.” At that time, a child (like a woman or a slave) enjoyed no rights or status in Jewish society. To be a servant of all is to welcome and serve even those who are regarded as “nobodies.”
Prayer: Servant-King, grant me the grace of humility to serve without discrimination as You did.
