May 9, Ascension of the Lord
God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord. —Psalm 47:6
Mass Readings: Acts 1:1-11/Eph 1:17-23 or Heb 9:24-28; 10:19-23/Lk 24:46-53
The Story Continues
Today’s first reading may sound like the end of a story — a grand finale — with Jesus taken up triumphantly into heaven. But the angels’ words serve as a reminder that the story isn’t over yet.
Today’s solemnity marks the close of one era, Jesus’ earthly ministry, and the dawn of a new era — an era which would be marked and sparked by the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Jesus promised, “you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you,” and commissioned His disciples to “be my witnesses . . . to the ends of the earth.” As followers of Christ, we share in that mission. So the story continues — and you and I are now a part of it.
Prayer: Risen Lord, help me to live each today as if You were returning tomorrow.
