May 7, Tuesday Easter Weekday
Your right hand saves me, O Lord. — Psalm 138:7
Mass Readings: Acts 16:22-34/John 16:5-11
Looking Beyond Pain
A toothache has a way of narrowing and limiting my focus. In the midst of a painful root canal, I’m unable to focus on anything beyond the ache in my jaw and those instruments of torture poised inches above my nose! Yet, what blessed relief once the dreaded procedure is done.
In today’s Gospel, the disciples are disturbed by the hard truths Jesus has been revealing and so distressed by the prospect of parting with their Master that they have not even asked where their Master is going. Yet, into the painful vacuum created by Jesus’ departure will flow the powerful and comforting presence of the Holy Spirit. When the going gets tough, we need God’s grace and wisdom to see beyond the pain and to stay focused on the glory that is to come.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, in testing times, help me keep my eyes fixed firmly on Jesus.
