Why So Many Marian Feasts?

Q. Why does Mary have so many feast days attached to her?

A. Here’s a reply from Father Reginald Martin:

The Church has several reasons for liturgical feasts to honor Mary. The first and most important is to acknowledge her place in our history of salvation. The Catechism of the Catholic Church observes: “She is inseparably linked with the saving work of her Son. In her the Church admires and exalts the most excellent fruit of redemption and joyfully contemplates … that which she herself desires and hopes wholly to be” (No. 1172). To remind us of this “inseparable link,” we celebrate Mary’s conception, birth, death and assumption — events that echo the same events in the life of Jesus.
