May 3, Sts. Philip and James, Apostles

Their message goes out through all the earth. — Psalm 19:5

Mass Readings: 1 Corinthians 15:1-8/John 14:6-14

‘Sign-ificance’ of Signs

Three years of hearing Jesus’ words and seeing His works . . . yet, in today’s Gospel, Philip will still plead, “Master, show us the Father.” The apostle had failed to look beyond the signs and discover their deeper “sign-ificance.”

But it’s not just Philip. The signs are here, all around us, too. In so many ways, God has made His presence “evident” (Rom 1:19-20); Jesus yearns for an encounter with us in the pages of the Scriptures (Jn 5:39-40); and the Spirit dwells within us, empowering us to do greater works in the name of Jesus (Jn 14:12). Yet, don’t we frequently fail to discern the significance of all these signs?

Prayer: Invisible God, awaken my heart to encounter You at every place and in every face.
