O God, let all the nations praise you! — Psalm 67:4

Mass Readings: Acts 12:24–13:5a/John 12:44-50

The Second Biggest Church

The old joke maintains that, after Catholics, the largest religious denomination in the world is ex-Catholics. The tragedy is that many members of this group will tell you they didn’t leave the Church. The Church, in their opinion, abandoned them. For them, Jesus’ words in today’s Gospel, “I did not come to condemn the world, but to save it,” contradict their experience with Catholicism.

So when I’m speaking with someone who is alienated from the Church, I need to keep these words of Jesus in mind. I need to listen with love and a spirit not condemning, but searching for a way to “save” him or her, not by compromising what I believe but by emphasizing that person’s value to me, to our Church, and to Our Lord.

Prayer: Jesus, give me the words to show Your love to those who feel condemned.
