Athirst is my soul for the living God. — Psalm 42:3
Mass Readings: Acts 11:1-18/John 10:1-10
So Many Voices
The sheep follow the Good Shepherd, Jesus says in today’s Gospel, because they recognize His voice. Do I recognize His voice? Do I even hear it, when worldly voices — glamorizing wealth or fame or pleasure or products — are so many and so insistent? The other day I was idling on the Internet, and opened and read an article about three reality-television “celebs,” sisters whose names you may know. There was nothing sinful in the story; it was harmless entertainment. But how did I get to a place where I open my eyes and brain to anything that comes along?
Jesus’ parable applies: There are so many worthless messages out there breaking in to steal my attention that it’s only with effort that I can hear the voice of the One who offers abundant life.
Prayer: Lord, help me to hear Your voice over the din of the world.
