Ablaze with Light
Tonight, as we gather on this most holy feast of Our Lord’s resurrection, we’ll enter the sanctuary in total darkness. This void of light will call to mind the 40 days of penance that have brought us to this vigil, and the darkness that covered the sky as Our Lord cried out, “It is finished.” But the God who spoke light into existence in today’s first reading will not let darkness prevail.
Our hearts quicken as suddenly, a small flicker of light begins to dance in the darkness. Then we hear the Exsultet — the words our souls have been thirsting for: “This is the night when the pillar of fire destroyed the darkness of sin!” Now, the entire church is ablaze with light. Christ, our Savior, is risen. Alleluia, alleluia!
Prayer: Light of the World, through Your death and resurrection, You have conquered the darkness!
