Remember us, O Lord, as you favor your people. — Psalm 106:4

Mass Readings: Exodus 32:7-14/John 5:31-47

The Golden Calf

Flipping through the bulletin, I saw that our parish was offering a new class on contemplative prayer. I hurried to the office to sign up, but my enthusiasm quickly waned after I read the course requirements: one hour of prayer every day, for six months. Wow. A solid hour of prayer . . . every day? Who has time for that? (Did I say that out loud?)

After rethinking my regrettable attitude, I decided to take an inventory of how I spent my time. Woefully, I discovered that Facebook, e-mail, and web-surfing had somehow become “priorities” in my life. In fact, I felt empty inside whenever I left home without my iPhone. Like the Israelites in today’s Old Testament reading, I’d given something of this world more importance than God. Technology had become my golden calf.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, give me the strength to remove false idols from my life.
