February 9, Saturday Weekday

The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. — Psalm 23:1

Mass Readings: Hebrews 13:15-17,20-21/Mark 6:30-34

True Rest

In today’s economy those fortunate enough to have jobs often find that their employers expect them to work far beyond the 40-hour week without extra pay. They must give their employers their cell phone numbers and leave the phones on constantly because they’re on call 24-7. Even if that’s not the case, many people are constantly wired into their electronic devices or they’re always on the go for one thing or another.

Jesus speaks to us all in today’s Gospel when He tells the apostles, after their first mission, to “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while” (Mk 6:31). Jesus extends that same invitation to each of us today: to take time out from the demands of life and rest a while with Him.

Prayer: Lord, let me find true rest in You, the shelter from all storms.
