February 10, Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, Lord. — Psalm 138:1c
Mass Readings: Isaiah 6:1-2a,3-8/1 Corinthians 15:1-11 or 15:3-8,11/Luke 5:1-11
I’m not the handiest person in the world, so I try to avoid home-improvement projects. But every now and then a need arises and false confidence overcomes common sense. What follows is usually hours of frustration and mounting anger egged on by taunts from the unfinished project and that part of me that correctly predicted that this is what would happen. About that time, my wife — who knows less than I do about these things — suggests something simple.
That must have been how Simon Peter felt in today’s Gospel after a night of empty nets. Here was this itinerant preacher and carpenter giving fishing tips to a professional fisherman who had labored all night in vain. Yet, Jesus’ suggestion, like those of my wife, prove again how God works in mysterious ways.
Prayer: Simon Peter, teach me to listen to Jesus as you yourself did.
