February 8, Friday Weekday
The Lord is my light and my salvation. — Psalm 27:1a
Mass Readings: Hebrews 13:1-8/Mark 6:14-29
One Sunday after Mass nearly 20 years ago, a friend introduced my wife and me to her two sisters. They had just arrived from Mexico to start a new life in the United States. My wife invited the three women to follow us home for tea and cookies so we could get to know them better. The only complication was the two newcomers spoke no English and our Spanish was best suited to ordering in a fast-food restaurant. We exchanged a lot of smiles and hand signals while forming a bond that continues today.
We have since met the entire family and been their guests. We’ve also watched them learn English, marry and have children they raise in the faith. In other words, as today’s first reading says, we entertained angels by not neglecting hospitality.
Prayer: Jesus, Master of Hospitality, may I always welcome others as You did.
