January 22, Day of Prayer for Unborn Children

The Lord will remember his covenant for ever. — Psalm 111:5

Mass Readings: Hebrews 6:10-20/Mark 2:23-28

Life Is Sacred

I remember taking a long bus ride to Washington, D.C., on this date many years ago and marching alongside thousands of other pro-lifers in the driving rain. Today thousands more will do the same to peacefully protest the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, a decision that resulted in the loss of young lives totaling more than 50 million and counting.

As we reflect on this sobering reality, let us pray for all those innocent lives at risk, for the defenseless and vulnerable, especially the unborn. It’s not always easy to be an outspoken opponent of abortion. Society wants to label us, demonize us, ridicule us. We, for our part, strive to remain strong in our conviction, refusing to rest until every person enjoys the right to life, from conception until natural death.

Prayer: Father, give me the courage to stand up for the vulnerable who deserve and need protection.
