January 19, Saturday Weekday
Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life. — (See John 6:63c)
Mass Readings: Hebrews 4:12-16/Mark 2:13-17
All Are Welcome
Today’s Gospel is one of those passages that make me cringe a bit. Jesus asks Levi to become His follower and brings down the wrath of the Pharisees who are shocked by His willingness to dine with sinners. I’d like to think I would have been inspired by Jesus’ action but, the truth is, it’s more likely I would have been in the group doing the finger-wagging.
We don’t like being pushed out of our comfort zones, and that’s what Jesus is doing in dramatic fashion today. Things aren’t always as we expect them to be or want them to be. Do we mentally wag a finger at certain people, thinking they don’t quite measure up to us in holiness? Jesus forces us to confront our judgmental feelings. We’re all invited to the table.
Prayer: Dear Lord, teach me to look on my brothers and sisters with love, not judgment.
