January 12, Saturday Christmas Weekday
The Lord takes delight in his people. — Psalm 149 (see 4a)
Mass Readings: 1John 5:14-21/John 3:22-30
He Must Increase
“Children, be on your guard against idols,” we read in the First Letter of John. And then later in the Gospel, comes John the Baptist’s famous line, “He must increase; I must decrease.” Two sides of the same coin, I think, reminders that if we are not careful we can let other things get in the way of our relationship with God.
For John it could have been power and a desire to maintain his place of popularity with his followers, not to be displaced by Jesus. For us it could be money, material things, jobs, physical beauty, and so many things that clamor for our attention and devotion. What are our idols? What has to drop away or at least decrease if we are to let Christ increase in our hearts and lives?
Prayer: You are first in my heart, Lord, even when I don’t always live that truth.
