January 11, Friday Christmas Weekday
Praise the Lord, Jerusalem. — Psalm 147:12a
Mass Readings: 1John 5:5-13/Luke 5:12-16
A Place Apart
Whenever my life gets super busy, which seems to be most of the time, regular prayer and exercise are often the first things to go. They seem a little self-indulgent. How can I take time to meditate when I’ve got deadlines to meet, Scout meetings to plan, and dinners to cook?
In today’s Gospel, we see people clamoring to be near Jesus. A leper is cured and word spreads like wildfire. Crowds are pressing against Him, “but he would withdraw to deserted places to pray.” We, too, need to retreat to the desert — whether it’s a beautiful chapel or simply a comfortable chair in a quiet corner of our house — to be replenished when life presses against us. Without the desert, we’ll be too overwhelmed to notice the lushness of everyday life.
Prayer: Jesus, help me to recognize when I need to retreat in order to move forward.
