My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior — 1 Samuel (see 1a)

Mass Readings:1 Samuel 1:24-28/Luke 1:46-56
A Song of Joy

I heard a report recently that the ukulele is back in popularity. Folks are looking for a simple, joyous kind of music-making. You do sometime hear music that sets your toes to tapping. The very sound of it gives you a lift. If such music makes you joyful, it’s only because it has its own source in joy.

In today’s Gospel, the quiet joy that Mary felt ever since she heard the words of the angel bursts forth into song: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior.” Through her voice, the joy of the peoples of all ages past and to come finds expression. Let us find joy also in her song of love, celebrating “the promise made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children for ever.”

Prayer: Mary, help me joyfully sing God’s praise.
