Six national, not ecumenical, councils held between 511 and 549 in the city of Orléans, France, at the direction of the first Christian king of the Franks, Clovis; legislation was enacted that gave structure to the Church in Gaul, promoted priestly celibacy, and encouraged charitable efforts by Christians.
